Dear users,
we are sorry to inform you, that we had to end development of our FurryBall after almost ten years!
We will give FurryBall for free to all users, but without any Maintenace and Support.
Because we have to keep our servers working, we have set the symbolic price 29,- EUR per year.
Hope you will understand us and keep using FurryBall if it fits you.
Thanks for all those nice years with GPU rendering.
Your FurryBall team

I've opened an old FB4 file and stripped it of Furryball by unloacking nodes and using maya's Optimize Scene feature, as prescribed by this discussion forum

Then I loaded FBRT and added a render node.

What's interesting, is only png textures are rendering at this time. Any ideas on this?

Yes, in alpha just PNG, EXR, HDRI, DDS and JPG.

TGA, TIF and others come later in beta.

I could go on for days. Here' my kneejerk review so far.

1. Raytrace is worth the wait. All my reflective surfaces and anything that shows the environment looks TERRIFIC with FBRT compared to FB4.8
2. I love the integration into the Maya Render Setting panel. This is the way every other plugin renders. It makes a lot of sense.
3. I love having the three primary FB materials on the toolbar. Great idea.
4. Also loving the new FB light objects. Are these more efficient to render? I'm using them exclusively, also, I like the geometry-based manipulators. I've always hated maya's tiny lights with all the cryptic HUD tools. I'm an Attributes panel kind of guy.
4. I like the feedback while working and tumbling with persp. It's a lot more nimble than FB4.8. I also appreciate the custom working res (set by default at 1/16) I can tweak it when my clients complain about "blockiness". That makes me look smart.
5. I have one scene (with the Kentucky Derby) that crashes every other frame while rendering, but I think some Maya extruded text is to blame. Nevertheless, changing the ray count by 1 would force a render for a few more frames, then I had to reboot and tweak and go again. I'll let you know if I find out more specific details on what's going on here. I don't think it's FBRT's fault.
6. I still use FB4.8 from time to time. When it's BG fodder, and mattes, etc. FB4.8 still rocks at providing lightening fast renders.
7. Render passes with FB is AWESOME! You know I've wanted this for some time. I'm just not one to complain. This saves me gobs of time. I no longer have to wake up and restart renders, or loose my sanity trying to hack command line gibberish just so I can leave my workstation.
8. FBRT seems to behave pretty well with the new GTA driver from nVidia. I was surprised there was no FB update immediately after the driver release. But I suppose we are in Alpha...
9. FBRT never crashes. It's much more stable while changing textures and lighting settings. FB4.X would crash if I really worked up to speed with FB on. But not FBRT. I wonder why?
10. FBRT loads about 2X as fast as FB4.8. I'm loving that.

That should do it for now, I have to get back to work.
